KRE-O, a cool new building toy

This is the time of year we start to pick up exciting new line of toys.  That’s right, Christmas is coming!  New for us is the KRE-O building system.  We have a wide range of transformers themed sets, like the one pictured here.  KRE-O is compatible with “leading brands”, most notably LEGO!  We think that is great, because that makes it so easy to give KRE-O a try without committing to a whole new brand.

Lego Mini Figures Series 5!!

Lego Mini Figures Series 5 is here!  Lego sets never seem to include quite enough figures, so these are great to fill out a collection and get creative play moving.  And, uh, *cough, cough* it’s not just the kids who are collecting!

Sweet Jelly Cat Plushies

Our collection of these very sweet and friendly “Jelly Cat” brand plushies just keeps getting bigger.  Pictured are two of the most popular characters, but there are so many more.  Jelly Cat products are designed in England, but seem to be catching on worldwide.  Definitely in Ottawa, anyways!  We love the high quality construction, and the charming variety of colours and textures that give these toys such personality.

New Air Hog Titan stunt glider

We are so excited about the Air Hog Titan foam stunt glider.  It’s four feet long, and can glide 150 feet.  It’s easy to put together, and comes with sticker decals.  But we think it is begging you to get creative with decorating!  The plain white foam is easy to paint or colour on, making it a fun activity to customize and then play with.  Priced at $14.99.  See you at the park!

New Smurf Boxed Sets from Schleich

The Smurf movie is finally in theatres!  From what I’ve heard so far, lots of parents are just as excited to see it as the kids(maybe even more!).  It’s great to see people getting to share this “when I was a kid…” memory in such a fun way!  Although we’re hearing so many tragic tales of  long-lost childhood smurf collections…I bet those are a big collectors item now!

Schleich has put out some lovely boxed sets to celebrate the movie.  In addition to a special “movie” set, there are reproductions of smurfs that were made each decade from 1960-2009.  Too cool!

Pack your bags!

Summer is here!  For many of us, that means it is time to take a trip.  Whether your trip will be short or long, the most pressing question will be: how to keep the kids busy?  Our staff always have lots of great ideas for fun on the go.  And we know that younger children are more of a challenge to entertain, which is why we are so impressed by the Trunki suitcase line from Melissa and Doug.

Trunkis are a hard plastic suitcase designed especially for tiny travellers.  The most exciting feature is that the Trunki is made to be ridden!  With a contoured saddle, wheels, and stabilizers to keep it from tipping, it is a dream come true to kill time while waiting in an airport.  Trunki is also equipped with carry handles, a shoulder strap, a lock, and secret compartments.  Best of all (from a grownup point of view!), the Trunki meets the requirements to be allowed as carry on luggage.

Stock up on crafting supplies and Easter egg decorating materials this spring! Make it easy to enjoy the holiday with your family by preparing a crafting kit in advance.

Make a basket by cutting construction paper into strips, and weaving them together for strength. Simply add a handle, a little stuffing, and display your children’s beautifully decorated eggs for the entire family to see! And, for those of you with a sweet tooth, throw in a few chocolates for decoration.

Let the Easter Games Begin!

What better way to get kids excited about Easter than to hold a scavenger hunt!? Every clue leads to a fuller basket and is a step closer to their special prize at the end of the trail. Taking the time to set up a treasure hunt will create lasting Easter memories for years to come. An Easter Scavenger Hunt Party can be fun for kids and adults-it’s a chance to socialize with the neighbours, get some fresh air and exercise and have fun!

Here are some simple tips and ideas to make your Easter morning a success!

Planning the hunt is half the fun! The game can be limited to the house, the yard or perhaps your local park. Why not make it a Street event? You and your neighbours can chat over coffees while the kids are running from yard to yard to collect their loot! Clues can come in a variety of forms and you can make your clues as obvious or difficult as you wish, just remember to keep them age appropriate. Here are some ideas you can try:

For little ones you can make a treasure map with symbols and simple drawings. Or, why not use the game UKLOO! UKLOO is a treasure hunt game designed to help reluctant and beginner readers. Kids have so much fun, they don’t even realize they’re actually learning to read!

Or how about leaving a trail of arrows for kiddies to follow…or my favourite, a trail of chocolate eggs.

Use PHOTOS or draw PICTURES. Clues can be an image of the actual hiding place or you can be a little more cryptic and have a picture of a hint of the location, such as a picture of a leaf if you want to send the kids to a tree.

For older children you can create riddles. You can use Plastic Easter Eggs to hold candy prizes and new clues to the next location.

Of course, there is the quick and dirty plan (but always a BLAST) the Free For All. Hide eggs and prizes all over the place and send the hunters out to gather!

You can even create a special gift for each child and put their name on it so they know when they find their unique prize.

Send us photos of your Easter Morning and feel free to post your Easter Morning Traditions for other families to try!
